Youth FAQs

What is the tuition amount for 2020-2021?

Tuition for the Youth program is $1,500 per student; however, tuition is set on a sliding scale based on the family's household income and ability to provide financial support. Financial assitsance is also available. Families must demonstrate financial need to receive financial assistance for the program.

Tuition includes orientation, opening retreat, snacks and lunches, program day facilitators/speakers, materials, and transportation throughout the program days. Tuition only pertains to those students who are accepted into the program. There is no cost to apply. All efforts are made to ensure that financial barriers do not exclude any selected students from program participation.

The sliding scale for tuition is as follows:

Tuition Income
$1,500 Over $100,00
$1,200 $80,000-$99,999
$750 $50,000-$79,999
$450 $30,000-$49,999
$100 Under $30,000

Is financial aid available?

Don’t Let Cost Deter You From Applying to the Program. Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka strives to enable everyone selected the opportunity to participate regardless of income. Partial scholarships are available and are awarded based on financial need and the availability of scholarship dollars. Last year more than 70% of our participants received some sort of financial aid. We will work with parents (you) to make it possible for everyone selected to Class 28 to take their place in the class.

How long is a typical program day?

The Youth program commences at 8:30 AM and concludes around 3:15 PM to allow program participants the opportunity to return to their respective schools for afternoon/evening activities.

Are meals and transportation provided?

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to/from the initial gathering location. Once assembled, Youth Leadership will coordinate any necessary transportation within the program day. Program Day pick-up will always be at the same location participants were dropped off in the morning. Lunches are provided by Leadership at the program sites.

Are the program days mandatory?

Program participants are strongly encouraged to attend all program sessions. Participants who miss more than one program day will not graduate from the Leadership program. The Youth retreat is mandatory.

What time commitments are involved beyond the actual program days?

All Leadership program participants are encouraged to take advantage of their exposure to community contacts to maximize their awareness and participation in community events. Participation in assigned project team groups is an essential step in this process. Participants can expect to invest a few hours per month beyond their normal program days to become an effective leader and contributor.
